NextTech Hack is a collaborative event where students from across various schools come together to develop innovative solutions for real-world challenges. It is a hackathon organized by the Google Developers Student Club, the University of Ibadan Chapter to bring other Google Student Clubs within the Southern Western Region together not only to build a solution but to bond and form an amazing team.

So, what is the purpose of this hackathon?

NextHack ignites the minds of young developers to become solution change makers. Thus, by harnessing the power of technology, participants will not be able to solve the problem within their local community but one which cuts across the different communities. Thus, the goal is to have a solution that has a lasting impact on the community.

SDGs in Action: How NextTech Hack Tackles Global Challenges

The essence of NextTech Hack lies in empowering young minds to contribute to a better future by addressing real-world problems aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations in 2015 are a comprehensive framework for addressing global challenges and achieving a more sustainable future. Here’s a brief overview:

1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere: This goal aims to eradicate extreme poverty and reduce the proportion of people living below the national poverty line.

2. Zero hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture: This goal focuses on achieving food security, eliminating hunger, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages: This goal aims to ensure healthy lives and well-being for all, including access to quality healthcare and reducing infant and maternal mortality.

4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all: This goal emphasizes access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for everyone, regardless of background.

5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls: This goal promotes gender equality and empowers women and girls in all aspects of life, eliminating discrimination and ensuring equal rights and opportunities.

6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all: This goal aims to ensure sustainable access to safe drinking water and sanitation for all.

7. Affordable and clean energy: This goal advocates for affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

8. Decent work and economic growth: This goal promotes sustained economic growth, inclusive and sustainable employment, and decent work for all.

9. Industry, innovation, and infrastructure: This goal focuses on building resilient infrastructure, promoting sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation.

10. Reduce inequalities within and among countries: This goal aims to reduce inequality within and among countries, ensuring equal opportunities for all.

11. Sustainable cities and communities: This goal promotes inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities.

12. Responsible consumption and production: This goal aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, minimizing environmental impact.

13. Climate action: This critical goal calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

14. Life below water: This goal strives to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources.

15. Life on land: This goal focuses on protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably managing forests, combating desertification, and halting biodiversity loss.

16. Peace, justice, and strong institutions: This goal promotes peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, providing access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels.

17. Partnerships for the Goals: This goal emphasizes the importance of global partnerships and cooperation to achieve the SDGs.

How to apply?

You don’t need a working demo to register — just pitch your idea. It is open to Students in tertiary institutions across the South-Western Region with Google Developer Student Clubs. You can seize the opportunity to make a difference in the South-West region of Nigeria. All you need is to form your team within your school’s GDSC and register via this link;

Important dates in the Hackathon: What do you need to know?

Stay ahead of the curve! Here’s a breakdown of key deadlines to ensure you don’t miss out:

  • Registration and Info Session: 27th February, 2024. Not to worry! This article was written after this date. This means you can still form your team and register if you are still very interested
  • 1st Stage Submissions: All submissions are to come in on or before 6th March. Remember, all you need is just to pitch your idea and follow the guidelines in the form
  • Finalists Announcements: Here, the top 5 teams that reached the finals are announced. This will be held on the 10th of March.
  • Grand Finale: All teams that reached the finals will come to Ibadan to defend their pitches or basic MVPs and the participants will be judged and accessed. This will be held on the 16th of March.
